Columns of Balam Ahau and Balam Kauil at Chichen Itza

The photo seen below is at the far right end of the ThousandColumns facade as one views the Warriors from the front steps. When the Maya rebuild this part of Chichen, they incorporatedthe older ruins. Apparently there was some reason for keepingthem intact and that was done here. Excavated first in 1923 andlater worked on in 1994. Columns of Balam Ahau and Balam Kauilor Columnata de Balam Ahau y Balam Kauil. Data is from ArchaeologistJose Osorio Leon who did the latter work.

When the westerly part of the Thousand Columns was first workedon, it was partly a large, roughly triangular-in-cross-sectionsolid wing that ran off the the south. Upon peeling it back, itwas found that the current facade enclosed an earlier structure, the south wing, so to speak, of the Thousand Columns (or whateverthe Maya called it).

The rounded columns and outer (now inner) walls initially supporteda pole and thatch roof, similar to that at the Mercado - itselfreally a palace. Later the organic roof was replaced by a vaultedstructure of impressive length. During the rebuilding, this later, inner structure was deemed important enough that it was very carefullypacked with rubble and then built over.(Bruce Rogers)
