"Welcome to Coba"
... as Ruben on the left and Jorge on the right would say. They were our bartenders and Guides as we traveled on our trip in 1996. Ruben was always joking around and could speak good English. Agua, cola and cerveza were frequently heard words from Ruben. Jorge, who spoke English very well and was a camera hog. He would always make sure we were having fun. He knew a lot about the Mayan's, plants, trees and the animals of the area. Both Ruben and Jorge were a must on our travels around the Yucatan. They went with us everywhere. If you ever see these guys tell them I said hi. During the 1997 trip back to see the Mayan Ruins we did see Ruben at Chichen Itza and he remembered us!
Located west of Tulum about 40 minutes by road is the incredible Coba ruins. Here in what I call the middle of the jungle is an archeological site I was very impressed with. After arriving at Coba we entered near a gift shop area and began walking for about 2 miles back into the jungle. We saw many small ruins that were still covered with overgrowth and some larger ruins that had began to become restored. The best pyramid to see is Nohoch Mul , it is the largest and the tallest in the area. The steps are high and wide as compared to La Piramide de Kukulkan at Chichen Itza. When you get to the top of the Nohoch Mul you can see 3 lakes and a lot of jungle that surrounds the area. After viewing the ruins we stopped at the "Club Med" of Coba. We had dinner and drinks in this place of beauty. The floors were very shinny and the atmosphere was mysterious and jungle like. I though it was odd that such a nice place like this was way out in the middle of the jungle.
